New Tech: What Tools do I need?

A young automotive technician just starting out has a long road ahead of him. If I was asked the question, "What is the best advice I could offer a new technician just entering the field?" I would advise this individual to be very careful of the tools you purchase!

The mobile tool dealers make it so easy to get in debt. They offer on the spot financing with weekly payments. It's very easy to purchase expensive tools you seldom use. Also, do not always purchase big name tools when a cheaper brand will do the job. Seriously, in the past 20 years I have probably wasted enough on tools (I hardly used) to fund my retirement!!!

Remember, it's better to "own" a specific tool than to own only a few name brand tools and not have the right tool. Furthermore, some tools are outdated. When was the last time you adjusted a carburetor, or used a dial indicator? What use to be a common repair like rebuilding a transmission, is now left to a specialty shop.

If you are new to the auto repair business, pick your tools wisely and don't overspend. Leave room for other necessities. Like the over-the-road truck driver, the transmission specialist gets all the glory. However, the experienced driver that is home with his family every night makes more money running dedicated local hauls and is a happy camper.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas ver.2008

The shop will be closed for 2 days but we will be working until lunch on Christmas Eve!

Santa rode into town on a red 97 Volvo wagon and the engine was toast. Must finish job before Christmas eve night.
